Design2Optimize(TM) is a powerful tool for optimising process conditions. It enables multi-criterial optimisations to be carried out, dramatically reducing the number of experiments required, and as a consequence significantly reducing the time taken to determine the ideal process conditions. With the growing complexity of the molecules entering the development pipeline, this time-saving ability is critical.

It also allows a digital twin to be created, giving significant additional insights into the process and how it will likely run in the real world. It is part of Lonza’s wider chemistry design continuum, including retrosynthesis and high throughput experimentation, that helps accelerate new molecules’ journey to patients.

Developed in conjunction with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics, Design2Optimize(TM) takes literature concepts, theories and methodologies, and brings them together in a single platform designed to optimise a process. It is applicable right across the development pipeline, from the early phases of development through late-stage projects to commercial manufacture, and can be used to optimise processes such as crystallisations as well as chemical reactions.

As a molecule moves through the pipeline, larger quantities will be required, and the process will need to be prepared for further scale-up to commercial production. This preparation for launch should be done well in advance to avoid delays, and Design2Optimize(TM) is the ideal tool to help complete this important work as quickly and efficiently as possible. As well as accelerating the development of key steps, it can be applied to help process improvement and debottlenecking. This enhances a molecule’s readiness to move into late-stage trials and, ultimately, the ability to manufacture it reliably at a commercial scale.
