Avantor’s J.T.Baker® Viral Inactivation Solution is an innovation in sustainable biomanufacturing. Designed to replace Triton™ X-100, an industry-standard detergent now restricted under EU REACH regulations due to its endocrine-disrupting and aquatic toxicity risks, this solution delivers high-performance viral inactivation while meeting today’s stringent environmental and regulatory standards.

The product is a ready-to-use, aqueous detergent formulation that inactivates lipid-enveloped viruses during the manufacture of biologics such as vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, plasma-derived therapies and gene therapies. It was engineered for biodegradability, low aquatic toxicity and ease of integration into upstream and downstream workflows, without requiring significant process changes.

J.T.Baker® Viral Inactivation Solution is REACH-compliant and does not require special authorization for use in the EU. The detergent is not classified as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) and has been validated under OECD 301F biodegradability protocols. Safety testing confirms a low environmental footprint, with significantly reduced risks to aquatic organisms compared to conventional detergents.

Importantly, the solution achieves >6 log reduction values in model viruses such as XMuLV, HSV-1 and BVDV, demonstrating viral clearance performance that meets or exceeds current industry standards. It is supported by a comprehensive safety and regulatory package, including Permitted Daily Exposure (PDE) data and Certificate of Analysis, making it easier for manufacturers to adopt.
