Practical Measures for Improving Sustainability and Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Medical Devices

Information

In this session Charlie will analyse a selection of medical devices of varying complexity, presenting which changes could be made to improve the sustainability of their development and lower their carbon footprint. He will explore design variants that can minimise carbon footprint through material selection and design choices.

The session will demonstrate how Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) can be used to benchmark varying degrees of design complexity and understand the environmental trade-offs. Charlie will cover the various stages that are analysed within these calculations, examining the environmental impacts of medical devices from the energy to manufacture to the globally distributed supply chain.

The talk will also explore how new features such as device connectivity can have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions.
