Every second cancer therapy uses active ingredients containing platinum, resulting in an annual market demand of roughly 2 tons of platinum – a demand that is strongly increasing. If only primary materials are used to meet this demand, the platinum alone would account for more than 63,000 tons of CO2e per year, according to the International Platinum Group Metals Association (IPA). At the same time, pressure on companies’ sustainability performance is increasing. Regulations are becoming more and more stringent, making sustainability a potential disruptor for the whole industry. A key challenge is to decrease carbon emissions. Circlear: Your Sustainable Solution for HPAPIs Our Carboplatin, Cisplatin and Oxaliplatin are now available under the Circlear brand with 100% recycled precious metals. This creditable solution reduces the platinum-associated emissions by 98%* while maintaining the same high quality and purity as HPAPIs derived from scarce primary sources. With platinum contents ranging from 49% to 65%, the precious metal is the biggest CO2e contributor for Carboplatin, Cisplatin and Oxaliplatin – the three most relevant HPAPIs used. Therefore, platinum HPAPIs Circlear address one of the most pressing challenges for companies in their sustainability ambitions: reducing their carbon emissions. Platinum HPAPIs Circlear can be used immediately without the need for reapprovals, as after refining, platinum from both primary and secondary sources has the same purity and quality, and cannot be distinguished from another – even on the atomic level. Circlear brand was introduced in April 2024 and stands for products from Heraeus Precious Metals made with 100% recycled precious metals. It is based on mass balance approach and verified by TÜV Süd according to ISO 14021.
