Heparin sodium

Heparin sodium has been medically important as an anticoagulant since its introduction over a half-century ago, and recently several new biological activities have been assigned to it. Applications: pulmonary embolism; prevention of pulmonary thromboembolism and deep venous thrombosis (also in pregnancy), acute phase myocardial infarction; prophylactic and curative treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolism. Heparin is also used during extracorporeal procedures such as open-heart surgeries or during hemodialysis.
