Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Our Products – Renewable Energy and Sustainable Materials as the Solution
Information
“Sustainability” is currently one of the most challenged topics by any pharmaceutical company when assessing primary packaging. Hereby multiple tracks are being investigated to ultimately improve the PCF (product carbon footprint). The origin of raw materials used (fossil, recycled, renewable), the source of energy (source and quantity), the technology efficiency and the consequent application of EcoDesign principles are just some to name. At Gerresheimer we approached this topic coming from a holistic perspective. Clearly, this is a “marathon” and not a “sprint”.
Gerresheimer reached the first stage by positioning their “Ecoline” products. The next stage is now reached by adopting new manufacturing technology for plastic containers achieving significant reduction of polymer use per container. Through these technological changes substantial energy savings occur. Consequentially, a new approach for the tool concept had to be pursued to cope with required design changes of traditional container types.
